While conservatories are known to have been erected in the mid 1600s, they were mainly stand alone buildings used for food storage. Orangeries were the most popular forms of glass house right up until the mid 1800s. By 1845, the abolition of window tax gave the wealthy Victorians the opportunity to make hay while the sun was shining, by extending their homes using steel and glass. And so the modern day conservatory gained popularity.
Wars, economics and maintenance took their toll on many residential glass out-houses, lean-tos, sunrooms and conservatories during the mid 1900s however better efficiencies in glazing, materials and construction options have brought the conservatory kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century.
Today it is a lot more appealing to extend and improve rather than sell and move. Families are looking to increase their living space with conservatories, orangeries and single storey extensions as an easier and cheaper alternative to estate agent and conveyancing fees, the upheaval and costs of furniture removal and upwardly spiralling house prices and hefty stamp duty taxes.
